“When Abel became Fable”is part of an ongoing series examining the visual language of confidence. Each composition is based on painted sketches and photographic references, created in collaboration with models invited to engage as active, empowered participants. Rather than occupying the traditional role of passive sitter, the subjects confront the viewer directly—demanding attention, asserting presence, and inviting dialogue.
I visited Abel in their home to create this piece and deliberately challenged myself to work at a larger scale than I had previously attempted from life. This process offered invaluable insight that will inform future large-scale works drawn from direct observation.
Abel is an actor who chose an outfit that harmonised beautifully with the space. I was drawn to the drama of the waistcoat and the surrounding colours, set against the ease of Abel’s posture—arms open, legs crossed confidently taking up space without apology. The work has balance of masculine and feminine energy, held with calm assurance.
