Jessica Britton - Biography

About the Artist

Jessica Britton

Jessica Britton is a British based oil painter, whose creative process results in chromatic and vibrant Contemporary portraiture using classical methods. She believes there is no one correct way to create the portrait, although there are key fundamentals. It is having the power of knowledge, teamed with practice, to choose which methods at any given moment will help you to achieve your intentions. Her work evokes the personality of the person and the feeling of the moment when the model and artist are working in unison. Her large studio works revolve around the narrative of self and relationships with others.

'The power of construction liberated me but the need for spontaneity fulfils me. The visceral Feeling of slick wet paint sliding across the canvas teamed with chromatic colour is my freedom.'

Art has been her sanctuary since growing up on a council estate in Portsmouth. From humble beginnings, drawing images from placemats and books onto stacks of computer paper -to achieving a BA in Fine Art.

Jessica is an artist educator and has 15 years teaching experience in secondary schools from the ages of 12 – 18 years old. She spent over 2 years as student to the artist Arthur Gain further developing her craft and taken part in workshops/demonstrations alongside artists such as Jeff Hein, Ruth Fitton and Jeremy Lipking.

Painting from life is a huge part of the working practice and as such, Jessica has run painting from life sessions in her own community and currently at the Skipton portrait sessions based at the Workshops in Yorkshire HQ.
